Area 37 Club Officer Training, August 2011

Area 37’s successful Club Officer Training was held on Saturday 6th August 2011 at the Manor Barn, Canterbury with the support of experienced Toastmasters, current and past Division Governors and even a past District Governor.

Following Area 37’s Council Meeting with the Presidents and mingling over refreshments, the session kicked off with introductions and welcome from the Area Governor, Sue Fish, and the discovery of everyone’s favourite food! We then discovered the enormous amount of experience and knowledge in the room, learning who were members of more than one club, who had participated in contests, what officer roles people had experience of and who had attended District 71 conferences. One had even been a member of Toastmasters for over twenty years! The benefits of utilising and sharing this experience and knowledge and networking were highlighted. In my experience Toastmasters are an extremely friendly, helpful and supportive bunch – you only have to ask!

Nick Benning, Treasurer of Tunbridge Wells Speakers and a past District 71 Governor, then explained the wider Toastmasters context. This included how the clubs fit into the Division and District, the benefits of interacting and visiting other clubs, attending District 71 conferences, entering contests, and encouraging those present to consider taking on further leadership opportunities within Toastmasters International.

The officers undertook a quiz to test their knowledge of the officer roles. A good discussion on the responsibilities then followed. The officers broke out into their respective officer groups to discuss three key focus areas and then fed back their findings to the rest of the group, which again prompted a discussion and a good exchange of ideas. These ideas were captured and circulated to the different clubs following the meeting.

Following a very quick break, Richard Murray, Division H Governor and Secretary of Canterbury Communicators, led a discussion on what a quality club is and how to achieve it. This was followed by Chris Howell, a past Division H Governor, on charting a course for club success through the Distinguished Club Program. Sue Fish then ran through the upcoming events for the area, division and district encouraging everyone to get involved as much as they can, before Richard Murray shared the latest news on Toastmasters International rebranding and the reforming of District 71.

Attendees enjoyed sharing ideas, knowledge and tips as well as “learning about the responsibilities of each role” and “understanding the wider organisation and how to improve club goals”. It was a “great opportunity to hear experiences and views from other clubs. I have some good ideas to discuss at my own club and potential practices to apply” was some of the positive feedback.

It was an action packed, interactive and very full agenda. Thanks to everyone for attending, participating and contributing to this informative, enjoyable and valuable training day.

Division H and Area 37 Governor Roles, May 2011

Canterbury Communicators can now count amongst its members the current Area 37 Governor, Chris Rose, Incoming Area Governor, Sue Fish, and Incoming Division H Governor, Richard Murray.  The new club year starts from 1st July when Sue and Richard will step into their new roles, along with the newly elected Canterbury Communicators' Club Officers.  All this coming on top of Robin Poole and Faith Warn's competition successes marks us out as the most vibrant and achieving club in the Area.  Onwards and upwards!

New Club Formed at the University of Kent, February 2011

Kent's newest Toastmasters club, Cathedral View Toastmasters, has recently opened at the University of Kent in Canterbury, under the sponsorship of Canterbury Communicators.  The aim of this club is to enhance students' employability. The idea was formed by Rebecca Sangster-Kelly, Student Innovation Ambassador.  From her experience in Toastmasters in Canada, she knew that members gain confidence and effectiveness in expressing themselves and develop keen skills in leadership, listening and giving positive feedback - all invaluable in the workplace.
